Who is a Bully and What is Bullying?
In some areas of society some believe only men are bullies. Such a belief and assumption is far from truth. Men as well as women are and can be bullies. A bully may be defined as follows:
Any person (male of female) who is aggressive or intimidating to weaker or subordinate individuals with the intent to over power, frighten, harass, mistreat, rule, manipulate, or control that individual for gain, amusement, or favor.
There are different types of bullies. They identify in several categories. The familiar types are the following:
1. School Bullies
3. Social Bullies
4. Workplace Bullies
5. Political Bullies
6. Culture Bullies
7. Revenge Bullies
What are Characteristics of A Bully?
Just as types of bullies exist, bullies also share some common characteristics. Characteristics are simple or common traits that bullies possess that help identify them. Nine of the most common characteristics of a bully are listed below:
1. Bullies have a strong need to be in control.
2. Bullies display aggression easily and sometimes rage
3. Most bullies believe they are doing no wrong.
4. Sensitivity and empathy are missing in most bullies feelings
5. Bullies have a strong need for attention, recognition, and praise
6. Many bullies enjoy causing pain, tears , and discomfort
7. Bullies ignore rules, feel superior, and are often jealousy
8. Bullies like feeling powerful.
9. Bullies generally have incorrect views of themselves
There are several categories of bullying, but fewer forms of bullying. Category is the group or class of bullying with similar traits. A form of bullying is the way a bully attacks another individual. Forms of bullying includes physical, verbal, revenge,cyber, and a few others. Of the various forms of bullying, the most common is called verbal bullying.
What is Verbal Bullying?
Verbal bullying is the use of language or words with the intent to insult, taunt, embarrass or belittle another individual with the desired purpose to shame or hurt the other party.
There are several types of verbal bullying. Below are some examples:
1. Threats--A verbal promise to injure or do harms "I'm going to get you after school"
2. Taunting--"you and my pet pig have something in common--your face"
3. Name calling--"fat ugly crybaby"
4. Mocking--imitating or making fun of persons with speech impairments "say say say say say say what"
5. Gossip--"Charlie's dad lost his job because he was drunk, Charlie homeless"
6. Rumor -- "I heard cheer leader Shirley has an STD"
7. Racial--racial insults and demeaning comments "you don't belong in this country"
8. Sexual--Telling filthy or inappropriate sexual jokes
9. Lying-deliberately speaking untruths to mislead or create problems for another
